Southern California, despite having the bulk of the state's population,
has very few clothing-optional beaches. The heart of this population center,
Los Angeles County, along with adjacent Ventura County to the north and
Orange County to the south, do not have even one legal or recognized nude
beach. Local residents must travel to either Santa Barbara County or San
Diego County to enjoy a "safe" naturist beach.
This has been an unfortunate situation for the Los Angeles tourist and convention
industry which has lost bookings from foreign groups, some of whom look
for the availability of a local naturist site in their booking criteria.
We know, some foreign groups have questioned the WANR; we have referred them
to other cities.
The basic facts are that Southern California has a political structure which
is far more conservative than that of Northern California. The only logical
explanation for this might be the much higher density of Latin American
people living within Southern California. The Latin culture with its overall
lack of tolerance and misunderstanding of naturism over shadows the European
influence of greater acceptance of the natural body.
The following are directions which have been copied, courtesy of WANR's
Nude Beach Maps. Although not as visually helpful as the maps, the directions
are complete and easy to use. Should you use them, we would appreciate hearing
of your experiences.
We have also added the nude beaches of Lake Tahoe and Mono County's hot springs as we
receive many requests for information regarding them.
